Mattress selection has more variables than most categories, and getting them wrong is expensive. Foam density is the most important spec for longevity: a 3 lb/ft³ memory foam layer will develop permanent body impressions within two years of regular use; a 4–5 lb/ft³ high-resilience foam will retain its shape and support for significantly longer. Hybrid mattresses pair foam comfort layers with an individually pocketed coil support core — the coils provide lift and breathability that pure foam can't offer, while the foam layers eliminate motion transfer between sleep partners. For bed frames, slat spacing should be no more than 6–8cm to provide adequate mattress support; wider gaps cause foam mattresses to sag between slats prematurely, and most mattress warranties are voided by improper slat support.
